Mission

LGBTQ Senior Housing’s mission is to facilitate access to welcoming, safe and affordable housing for low-income LGBTQ seniors, including through a formal role in the development of such housing; to define onsite housing services and programming that addresses the needs of LGBTQ seniors; and to support community space to serve seniors in the Greater Boston community.

History

LGBTQ Senior Housing Inc. began in 2015 as a Task Force of committed individuals, looking to find ways to address the need for safe and inclusive affordable housing for LGBTQ seniors. In 2018, we incorporated as a 501(c)(3) organization, and are working to make our vision a reality.

Our First Community - The Pryde

In 2019 following a competitive bid process, LGBTQ Senior Housing was awarded the former William Barton Rogers Middle School in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Boston along with our housing development partner Pennrose. Our design partner is the architecture firm DiMella Shaffer. We are presently renovating the historic 100,000 square foot building through adaptive reuse, into 74 apartments of LGBTQ-friendly affordable senior housing, which will be home for residents aged 62 and over. Known as The Pryde, it will include a 10,000 square foot LGBTQ Community Center, offering diverse social, educational and cultural services and programming to residents, the larger LGBTQ community, and the local diverse Hyde Park neighborhood, offering a new and expanded community gathering space.   We expect to welcome our first residents in early 2024.

The Pryde will be the first such housing development in New England.  With the success of this project, we will be addressing both the need for welcoming and affordable housing and services that are intentionally LGBTQ-affirming.

Beyond the establishment of this first community, we will continue to explore opportunities to develop additional sites as well as partner with other organizations to help make other senior housing LGBTQ-affirming, as we believe that all senior housing should be welcoming and safe for LGBTQ seniors.
